Zembook vs Tally
Tally is the software most Indian businesses and almost every CA already know, and that is a real advantage that no feature list cancels. This page is about where Zembook is a better fit and where it is not - including the cases where you should stay on Tally.
Choose Zembook if
- You want your existing Tally books moved over rather than retyped - Zembook reads Tally's own export.
- You want the cost to start at nothing and stay predictable.
- You want several users on the same books over the shop's own network without buying a separate multi-user edition.
- You want to read a bank statement PDF or photograph a supplier's bill into an entry.
- The person doing data entry is more comfortable speaking Hindi than navigating menus.
Stay on Tally if
- Your CA works inside your books directly and wants them in Tally - this is the strongest single reason, and it is a good one.
- You depend on a TDL customisation or a third-party add-on built for Tally.
- You need payroll inside the same software.
- You have branches abroad or need multi-currency as a daily thing.

| Question | Zembook | TallyPrime |
|---|---|---|
| Does it work with the internet off? | Yes. The books are a file on your own computer and every screen works with the internet off. | Yes. TallyPrime is a desktop application and works offline too. |
| What does it cost to start? | Free to start, and the free tier is a working product rather than a countdown. | A paid licence, plus an annual subscription (TSS) for updates and some connected features. Check their current pricing. |
| Can it bring my existing books in? | Imports directly from Tally's XML export and from BUSY, including several past financial years in one go. | Imports from Tally's own formats. Moving books INTO Tally from another product usually means an export/rework step. |
| GST returns | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B as portal-ready JSON, GSTR-2B reconciliation against your own purchases, e-Way Bill and e-Invoice files. | Full GST support, long established, with connected filing features on the subscription. |

| Do people already know how to use it?Tally wins | Keyboard shortcuts are deliberately Tally-style, so an operator who knows Tally is quick from the first day - but the software itself is new. | Almost every accountant and CA in India already knows it. Staff can be hired who need no training at all. |
| Customisation and add-onsTally wins | No scripting language. What you see is what it does. | TDL lets a developer customise Tally deeply, and there is a large market of ready-made add-ons. |
| Reading a bank statement or a supplier bill | Reads a bank statement PDF - password-protected or scanned - and can read a photographed purchase bill into an entry you review before saving. | Bank statement import is supported; reading a photographed bill is not a standard part of the product. |

Questions people ask
- Can I move my Tally data to Zembook?
- Yes. Export your company from Tally as XML and import it into Zembook - masters, all voucher types, and several past financial years in one file. Running the same import twice does not duplicate anything, because vouchers are matched on Tally's own internal identity rather than on the voucher number, which is not unique in Tally.
- Will my CA be able to work with Zembook?
- Every report exports to PDF and to Excel, which is what most CAs actually ask for. If your CA works inside your books directly and wants Tally, that is a genuine reason to stay on Tally - we would rather say so than have you find out in March.
- Is Zembook really free, or is it a trial?
- There is a free tier that is a working product, and paid plans for businesses that need more. See the pricing page for what is in each.
- Does Zembook work without the internet, like Tally?
- Yes. The company file is a database on your own computer. Every screen - entry, reports, printing - works with the connection off. The internet is only needed for optional things like the GSTIN lookup, updates and the phone app sync.
