Zembook vs Zoho Books
Zoho Books is a good accounting product and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. It is cloud software on a subscription, maintained by somebody else - which suits some businesses exactly, and suits others not at all.
Choose Zembook if
- You want to buy the software once rather than pay for it every year you own the business.
- You want the books on your own machine, and no dependency on a connection to enter a bill.
- You are moving off Tally or BUSY and want those company files read in.
- You want batch and expiry, godowns and serial numbers as part of the same product.
- Everyone who uses it works from the same premises.
Stay on Zoho Books if
- Your team works from different cities and needs the same books open at once.
- You want automatic bank feeds rather than importing statements.
- You already use Zoho for CRM, Inventory or Payroll and want them joined up.
- You would rather the software were maintained, updated and backed up entirely by somebody else.
Side by side
Zembook’s column is what our software does today. The Zoho Books column is what they publish, checked August 2026— editions and pricing change, so confirm anything that decides your choice on their own site. Rows marked Zoho Books wins are the ones where the honest answer is that they are better.
| Question | Zembook | Zoho Books |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud or on my own machine? | On your machine. A Windows desktop application on a local database, one file per company. | Cloud, reached from a browser or their apps on any device. |
| Does it work with the internet off? | Yes. The books are a file on your own computer and every screen works with the internet off. | No - it is a cloud product, and no connection means no access. |
| Same books from several citiesZoho Books wins | No. Sharing is over your own LAN, one premises. | Yes, and this is exactly what it is built for. |
| Automatic bank feedsZoho Books wins | No. Statements are imported and reconciled against your entries; Zembook never asks for banking credentials. | Bank feeds connect directly, which is genuinely less work. |
| GST work | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B JSON, GSTR-2B reconciliation, e-Way Bill and e-Invoice exports, reverse charge marked on the voucher, TDS register, ITR computation, depreciation. | Strong on Indian GST as well, including returns and e-Way Bill. This is not the line the decision turns on. |
| Can it bring my Tally or BUSY books in? | Imports directly from Tally's XML export and from BUSY, including several past financial years in one go. | Imports from spreadsheets and from other Zoho products. Not a Tally or BUSY company migration. |
| Stock depth | Batch and expiry, multiple godowns, stock transfer and journal, physical verification, serial numbers with warranty - in the same product. | Good stock in Books, and deeper again if you add Zoho Inventory alongside it. |
| Wider ecosystemZoho Books wins | One product, plus a free Android companion. Nothing to integrate and nothing to join up. | CRM, Inventory, Payroll and the rest of Zoho, joined up. If you want that, it is a real advantage. |
| What does it cost over five years? | Free for 90 days on Windows, then a monthly plan or a one-time lifetime licence that does not renew. Android free. | A per-organisation subscription, billed for as long as you need the books. |
Questions people ask
- Is Zembook a full replacement for Zoho Books?
- For a single-premises Indian business keeping its own books, yes. For a team spread across locations, or one that depends on bank feeds and the rest of the Zoho suite, no - and it would be dishonest to say otherwise.
- Can I import my Zoho Books data?
- Not as a company migration. Zembook imports Tally and BUSY directly, plus item, party and bank data from files. From Zoho Books, most businesses move at a financial year boundary with masters and opening balances.
- What happens to my data if I stop paying?
- With the lifetime licence there is nothing to stop paying, and the company file stays on your machine regardless. That is the practical difference from any subscription product: access to your own history does not depend on a live account.
- Does Zembook connect to my bank?
- No, deliberately. Bank statements are imported and reconciled against your entries. Zembook never asks for banking credentials and cannot move money.
